ABOUT CPED

The Centre for Population and Environmental Development CPED), Benin City, Nigeria is an established non-governmental and non-profit organization in Nigeria which has a solid foundation having been in existence as an applied research group at the University of Benin, Nigeria since the mid 1980s. Early in 1985 a research group known as the Benin Social Science Research Group was formed under the leadership of Professor Andrew G. Onokerhoraye who was then Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Benin, Benin City Nigeria. The Group was concerned with research on development problems at the grassroots level in Nigeria. The research group also believed that pilot programmes, which will demonstrate the effectiveness of research recommendations at the grassroots level, must follow research. The emphasis was also on the participation of the grassroots population in the development programmes in their locality. The experiences of the Benin Social Science Research Group show that if the grassroots population is carried along in poverty alleviation programmes success will be achieved more rapidly. In order to translate its activities more widely, the Benin Social Science Research Group has transformed into a non-governmental and non-profit organization. The Corporate Affairs Commission officially registered CPED in Nigeria as a non-profit and non-governmental organization with Registration Number 12428. The leadership of the new organization known as the Centre for Population and Environmental Development, (CPED) is also under the leadership of Professor Emeritus Andrew G. Onokerhoraye who completed his appointment as Vice Chancellor (President) of the University of Benin, Benin City having served in that capacity between 1992 and 1998.
