A PILOT PROGRAMME ON IMPROVING BASIC NEED IN POST-DISASTER JESSE COMMUNITY IN NIGERIA THROUGH LOCAL PARTICIPATION AND EMPOWERMENT

The pilot project which was partly funded by CORDAID based in Netherlands is design to improve the provision of the basic needs in the community and to empower the people to be able to respond to the challenges of poverty alleviation. The project has been completed and an evaluation of its impact carried out. It show that the people of jesse Community were positively affected by the project as they were empowered and social services were improved upon in the community. Five health centers and six educational institutions were rehabilitated in the community. A total of 55 community-based organization and groups were trained and empowered while 150, people benefited from income generating activities that were financed through the project. In fact, it was this partnership and search for means of livelihood by the participants that led to the conception of one of our project on income generation in the area.

DEMOGARPHY AND BASELINE SURVEY OF THE NIGER DELTA STATES

The Niger Delta area of Nigeria is one of the most important areas of Nigeria, being the region that generates over 90% of the national revenue. As one of the frontline NGO committed to development of the Niger Delta, CPED was commissioned by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to take the demography and baseline survey of the area, which is made up of nine states namely: Abia, Akwa, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers. The study was full scale demographic and baseline survey of the nine states including education, health and other social and infrastructural facilities. Participatory approach entailing key in format interviews and focus group discussions was used in the study. The project has been completed and final report has been integrated into the Niger Delta Master Plan.

GLOBALISATION AND MALARIA-RELATED PRIMARY HEALTH CARE DELIVERY AND ACCESS IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES: A STUDY OF THE NIGER DELTA REGION IN NIGERIA.

This action research was funded by the Word Health Organization (WHO), and focused on the survey of the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population in the selected communities in relation to communicable diseases, and how these have changed as a result of globalization in the recent years in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State. The project has been successfully completed and the findings show that health care facilities for the treatment of malaria in the remote communities of the Niger Delta region are lacking and the people living in such localities are disadvantaged. A key finding of the project is that globalization has worsened health status of the people.

PUBLIC POLICY, OIL AND ENVIROMENTAL CONFLICTS IN NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA

The research project funded by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) focused on the survey of the socio-economic impact and violence arising from public policy on oil production in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The project focused on selected communities in twelve LGAs selected from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State. The project has been successfully concluded. The nature and cause of conflicts in the Niger Delta were identified especially the role of oil exploration in promoting these conflicts. The policy implications of the findings were outlined and made available to key stakeholders in the region.

TRAINIG FOR COMMUNITY BASED CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA’S NIGER DELTA REGION

This action research and training project funded by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) focused on the examination of the issues generating conflicts in the Niger Delta Region. It then provided training on conflict management for leaders of organizations and groups in Delta State one of the states in the Niger Delta Region. It also produced a community-based conflict management manual for post-training activities participants in the train-the trainers program in communities of Niger Delta Region. Finally it supports the network of trained leaders and individuals in the development and implementation of peer education in conflict management activities in their communities and organization in the Niger Delta Region. The training program has been concluded and a total of 200 community-based individuals were trained in conflict management in Delta State, Nigeria.
