TRIANING OF COMMUNITY-BASED FACILITATORS FOR POST CONFLICT RECONCILATION AND REHABILITATION IN THE ETHNIC CONFLICT AREAS OF DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

This action research and training project funded by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) focused on the education and training of key facilitators in the communities of the target three Local Government Area in Delta State on reconciliation and rehabilitation techniques, so that the facilitators would ultimately design their own programs in their respective villages/communities for reconciliation and rehabilitation activities. The implementation of the project led to an assessment of the challenges facing reconciliation and rehabilitation among the three ethnic groups at the community/village level after the signing of the agreement facilitated by the Delta State Government; the provision of training on reconciliation and rehabilitation for facilitators representing the three ethnic group; the production of a community-based reconciliation and rehabilitation manual for post-training activities of the facilitators in the train-the-trainers program in their villages/communities; and support for the network of trained facilitators in the development and implementation of peer education in reconciliation and rehabilitation activities in their communities.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY-BASED CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE PARTICIPATION OF THE GRASSROOTS POPULATION OF ETHIOPE WEST LOCAL GOVERMEN AREA OF DELTA STATE IN THE 2003 ELECTIONS

This was project funded by UNDP and UK Department for International Development (DFID) through TMG in 2003. The training and mobilization were also preceded by baseline survey of the target communities using participatory approach. This project was very successful since it led to a change of attitude of most voters who were reluctant to vote, but through the mobilization effort of CPED, over 80% of voting was recorded in the area were the project was carried out.

CAPACITY BUILDING OF GRASSROOTS WOMEN AND YOUTH CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS IN AKWA IBOM, EDO AND IMO STATE FOR IMPROVED RESPONSE TO HIV EPIDEMIC.

This project was funded by World Bank Assisted Project on HIV/AIDS through National Action Committee on AIDS now Nation Agency for the control of AIDS (NACA). The project also used participatory approach in the baseline survey, which has been followed by capacity building of key grassroots organizations. The project was designed to identify the key women and youth community-based organizations in the nine target LGAs in the Akwa Ibom, Edon and Imo State and empower them through organizational management training. It also aimed at providing training on HIV/AIDS education for leaders of the identified organization and groups in the nine target LGAs in the Akwa Ibom, Edo and Imo States. Finally it supported and directed the network of trained women and youth leaders of community-based organizations in the nine LGAs in Akwa Ibom, Edo and Imo States in the development and implementation of peer education in HIV/AIDS to their members and other people in their communities. The following leaders of different groups in the target communities were empowered by training; 50 women and youth community-based organizations (CBOs); 27 leaders of Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs); 300 women leaders of CBOs and NGOs; 200 youths leaders of CBOs and NGOs; 35,000 women and youth members of the empowered CBOs. The peer education activities of the trained leaders covered over 500,000 people in the remote communities of the three target states.

CAPACITY BUILDING OF COMMUNITY-BASED CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS IN UHUNMWODE, ESAN CENTRAL AND ETSAKO CENTRAL LGAS OF EDO STATE FOR HIV/AIDS PREVENTION, CARE, SUPPORT AND IMPACT MITIGATION

This project was funded by World Bank Assisted Project on HIV/AIDS through Edo State Action Committee on AIDS (SACA) was designed to improve and strengthen the sustainable participation of the grassroots civil society groups and organizations in the control of the spread of the HIV/AIDS include care, support and mitigation in Uhunmwode, Esan Central and Etsako Central LGAs of Edo State, so that these civil society groups would ultimately design and manage their own program in their respective communities. The three LGAs were selected from the three Senatorial Districts in the state. The project which has been completed achieved the following. Identified the key women and youth community-based organizations (CBOs) in the three target LGAs in Edo State and empowered them through organizational management training. Provided training on HIV/AIDS education for leaders of the identified organizations and groups in the three LGAs in Edo State. Supported and directed the network of trained women and youth leaders of community-based organization in the three LGAs in Edo State in the development and implementation of peer education in HIV/AIDS in their communities (awareness raising and sensitization). CPED worked with the empowered CBOs to provide confidential counseling and testing (VCCT) to about 1,476 people. Finally CPED worked with the empowered CBOs to provide support for about 100 identified groups affected by HIV/AIDS (people living with/affected by HIV as well as orphans and vulnerable children).
