FORMULATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT & DEVLOPMENT STRATEGY (LEEDS) IN LAGS IN NIGERIA
CPED has been involved in strategies to attain the Millennium Development Goals, especially through Nigeria’s response known as NEEDS at the federal level, SEEDS at the state level, and LEEDS at the local level. While so much attention has been given to the planning of NEEDS and SEEDS, the situation with respect to LEEDS is different. Through the funding of the United Nations Development programme (UNDP). CPED has pioneered the participatory formulation of LEED. The project has the following elements: The design of an effective and efficient participatory methodology and tools for development of LEEDS in Nigeria: Technical support to the design and development of LEEDS in 12 selected Local Governments in Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Cross River, Kogi, and Ondo, which provided a model/framework for development of LEEDS in other Local Government Area of the country. The project has been concluded and the methodology developed is now being used by many states in the formulation of their LEEDS. CPED is involved in the use of the methodology in ten different states in Nigeria.
EVALUATION OF SEVENTY EIGTH SPDC INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN DELTA STATE, NIGERIA
The monitoring and evaluation project which was funded by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), carried out a focus group discussion survey with the users of the facilities and examined the state of functionality of the projects. The findings provided a basis for the recommendation of what should be done to improve the sustainability of SPDC supported infrastructural projects in the region.
ACTIVITIES COVERAGE
The programme activities of CPED currently spread all over twenty states in all the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. A major proportion of CPED activities are however in the nine Niger Delta States. In other words, though our focus is on Niger Delta State, CPED activities cover other states in Nigeria.
COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
CPED has collaborative arrangements with reputable research and action based institution in USA and UK. At present CPED is working with the Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard University, Boston as well as the Policy Development Analysis Center of the School of Oriental and Africa Studies, University of London. Locally CPED has collaborative arrangements with the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, Delta State University, Abraka among others. CPED also works with a number of local NGOs and community based organizations.
