Intervention Project on reproductive health in Akotogbo, Ondo State
On the basis of a baseline survey commissioned by the Ese-Odo Location Authority in Ondo State, Nigeria, an intervention programme was implemented in Akotogbo Community which has a population of about 25,000 people. The intervention programme entails educating the women and youths on reproductive healthcare and providing services for them through their participation. It was the first programme of its type in this part of Nigeria. The local government is trying to replicate the programme in the other settlements in the locality.
Isiokolo Community Intervention Project on Prevention of Petroleum Pipeline Vandalisation
Following the well-known Jesse Community fire disaster in 1998, in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, the Ethiope East Local Government in Delta State of Nigeria commissioned CPED to carry out a baseline survey and pilot project on mobilizing the people of the Local Government Area in towards avoiding similar disaster. The programme entailed a participatory action programme entailing the training of trainers and the education of the population in the Isiokolo Community. The project was successful, as the people in the community have become conscious of the danger involved in tampering with petroleum pipelines passing through their community.
Promotion of Primary Healthcare in Okpara Community Ethiope Local Government Area
This pilot project was a joint programme by CPED and Okpara Progressive Union a community-based organization for the Okpara Community. The organization was concerned about how to improve primary healthcare and reproductive health services and their utilization in the community instead of the tendency of the people to use ineffective traditional methods. Through a participatory approach, the community has been mobilized to be providers and users of modern reproductive health services and education. CPED is still monitoring the sustainability of the programme and its effects on overall change in the attitude of the people in the community.
Vocational Training for Youths in Business Management in Emevor
Unemployment particularly among youth people continues to be a major problem throughout Nigeria. Yet the educational system has not adapted to the currents skills required by youths to seek self-employment in view of the decline in public employment opportunities as a result of liberalization and globalization. CPED in association with the Isoko Local Government, the Delta State Government and Community-Based Associations have provide a three-month training to about 250 youths in skills development for self-employment and some of the beneficiaries have obtained credit facilities to start their own enterprises.
Identification and Analysis of Community-Based Organizations in Ondo State, Nigeria
Community-based organizations have been playing important roles in the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria. In many parts of Nigeria, records of the nature and activities of these organizations are not readily available. CPED was commissioned by the Ondo State Government to document the existing community-based organizations in the state and analyze their roles. CPED adopted a participatory approach and made recommendations on how to use the community-based organizations to facilitate social, economic and political development in this era of democracy.
Identifying natural resource-based opportunities for investment and development in Delta State, Nigeria
The main aim of the project is to identify the opportunities for investment in the different ecological zones of Delta State, Nigeria for sustainable grassroots development. The various opportunities for investment based on natural resources and agricultural activities were identifies for the different local communities in the state, which are expected to promote private and public sector participation in grassroots development in the state. The project was commissioned by Shell Nigeria (SPDC) West Division based in Warri, Nigeria. This project has been completed.
Public Policy, Oil and Environmental Conflicts in Niger Delta, Nigeria: Ramifications for Regional Security
The project which was funded by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and focused on the survey of the socio-economic impact of conflict and violence arising from public policy on oil production in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The project is focusing on selected communities in twelve LGAs selected from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States. The project has been completed and the report submitted to USIP.
A Pilot Programme on Improving Basic Needs in Post-Disaster Jesse Community in Nigeria through Local Participation and Empowerment
The main goal of the pilot project is to improve the provision of the basic needs in the community and to empower the people to be able to respond to the challenges of poverty alleviation. The specific objectives are as follows:
- To improve the provision and utilization of healthcare facilities particularly reproductive health services among the target population of Jesse Community.
- To improve the supply and utilization of pre-school, primary and secondary education among the target population of Jesse Community.
- To improve the opportunities and access to income generating activities among the target population in Jesse Community.
- To empower the target population in Jesse Community to appropriately respond to the challenges of providing basic needs and avoiding environmental disaster in their community.
The partnerships and relationships built with the key stakeholders in Jesse Community are still in place and these actually influenced the conception of the proposed of the proposed project. These partnerships facilitated the execution of the proposed project in the community. The project was conceived and being executed by CPED with the participation of stakeholders in Jesse Community. The project is partly funded by CORDAID based in Netherlands.
