Training of Local Government Officials on Population Stabilization Issues
Local Government Officials from the social welfare and health department of their local governments play major roles in the mobilization of the grassroots population on population issues especially family planning and other reproductive and child care issues. Yet experience has shown that these officials are not adequately trained on population stabilization and related problems and how to implement programmes in them. CPED in association with the Delta State Local Government Service Commission organized a four-week training programme for about 149 local government officials responsible for social welfare and health matters so as to improve their performance in grassroots population management and education programmes in their localities. The training was successful and the trainees have since returned to their duty posts. CPED is occasionally involved in the monitoring of their activities.
Training of community-based organization’s officials in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State
Local community organizations now play major roles in mobilizing their members at the grassroots level as participants in the implementation of state and non-state sponsored projects. However, experience has shown that the leadership of these organizations is not well informed about what their associations can do to improve the welfare of their members in terms of seeking support from local and international agencies/NGOs for their programmes. This training focused on educating the leaders of these organizations on projects identification and the preparation of simple project proposals, which they can present, to state and non-state actors for support. A total of 118 officials from over 20 community-based organizations were so trained.
